Play Kitchen

10 Aug

Since I saw this post, I wanted to make a play kitchen for my little girl.  I decided it will be the perfect gift for her 3rd birthday.  After I bought the television cabinet, I planned for days/weeks.  And here is the before and the after photos.

Play Kitchen Before and After

And here is how we did it…

We decided to take out the divider (between the TV and the shelves).  For the back, we used old knotty pine ceilings (we took it out when renovate our house).  Hubby made the hole for the sink. Then I primed the whole cabinet.

Then 2/3 coats of soft blue paint.  The inside of the oven was painted black.  Hubby did the tiling and grouting.

For the shelves, I re-use an old cd rack that we don’t use anymore.  I took of all the CD dividers and made space for the microwave.

The stove is a wooden placemat and the burners is wooden coasters (I bought those at a craft store).  The stove knobs I got for free from a Appliance Repair shop.  After a lot of cleaning, it was like new.  The oven door is a piece of wood that hubby had cut to size.  He cut out the hole and insert a piece of Perspex.

The sink is a stainless steel dog bowl.  The faucet is from our old bathroom.

And then the fun part…  the decorating.  I just loved that.  The two baskets is for the food and baking stuff.

A place for the shopping bag and apron.

And a blackboard for the shopping lists of menu.

And my girl???  Well, she was just loving it.  You can tell from her big smile.

coffee gift set for someone special

15 Jan

Each year it takes me about 2 month to think about the gifts to buy/make for Christmas. I just can’t walk into a shop and just buy something.  I think about the person and what they love.  For my colleagues I love to make something.  Although all of them get the same gift, I create the gift with that particular person in mind.  What colours does she loves, etc.

For this past Christmas, I gave them each a coffee gift set.  We all just love drinking coffee at work.  and this is how I did it.  (just keep in my mind that this was my first mosaic project ever.  it’s not perfect, but I’m hooked now.

Firstly I made a coaster for each person.  I bought a small wooden tray and painted it black.  Maybe you can paint it after the mosaic.

Dec 023

Apply project/craft glue on the inside

Dec 024

And do your mosaic thing.  Since it was my first project and didn’t want it too difficult, I used strips of mosaic blocks.

Dec 025 Dec 026

And voila…. the pasting part is finished.

Dec 027

After the glue dried, it time to do the grouting.  Just mix water with normal tile grout to a thick mixture and apply it onto the tiles.

Dec 029

Scrape the surplus off with a credit card.

Dec 030

After the grout dried, wipe the tiles clean.  You can now paint the tray black, if you didn’t do it at the first step

Dec 031

cover the tiles and spray the tray with a spray varnish

Dec 032

Now the coaster is finished. you can buy any beautiful mug.  I’ve decided to buy white mugs and paint their names on it with ceramic paint.

Dec 033

And now to complete the gift set.  I melted chocolate and dipped spoons in it and let it dry.  This makes a great hot chocolate when mixing with hot milk.

Dec 035

Then I google for nice cappuccino and coffee mixture recipes and pour it into little canisters.

And this is how their gifts look like.

Dec 037

A nice gift for a coffee lover.

Bookcases Ideas

11 Oct

While renovating our house, I decided to create a "library" area.  Big bookcase, comfy chair and ottoman, big reading lamp.  Get the picture????

Well, it’s a year later, and the "library" space is still open.  The books is still packed away.  Maybe it is time to create a warm comfy place to read.  But I still can’t decide what kind of bookcase to use.

My requirements is:  a big wall bookcase, must be strong enough to hold hundreds of books, must look good – this is the one of the first things you will see when entering the house.

Let’s see what ideas is available on the web.  (just click on the pic to visit the applicable website)

There is so many different bookcases.  Very modern ones but those won’t carry all my books.  But these are my favorites.  Now to choose…  decisions decisions decisions.

Gift for a baby

10 Oct

After this post, I was so inspired to make a gift for the stork party I was attending.  I loved the baby bouquet and the tie vest.  But instead of doing appliqué on the vest, I decided to use a product I bought about a year ago and never used it.  and I just LOVE this product:  Picture Perfect from Dala.  It was the first time using Picture Perfect and the results wasn’t 100% perfect, but now I know how to use it.  and it is really easy.

Sept 2010 002

Let me show you how:

Make a copy of a picture you want to use.  I made a tie on a Word document and print it.  Then copy it.  It must be a copy.  If you want to use words, print it in mirror view.

Sept 2010 001

Cut it out and apply a layer of Picture Perfect on the print side of the coy.

Sept 2010 003

Place wet side on the fabric and roll with a firm roller over picture to ensure there is no bubbles.

Sept 2010 006

Leave it overnight to dry. Place a wet sponge or a few wet paper cloths on top of the picture for about 20 – 30 minutes.

Sept 2010 007

Gently rub your fingertips over the picture.  Paper will come off in small pieces.  After removing the first layer, wet the picture again with wet sponge and rub fingertips again.

Sept 2010 008

Let the paper dry.  Paint a layer of Picture Perfect on the paper again.  Let it dry.

Sept 2010 009

Iron on the reverse side and Voila, You are finished.

Sept 2010 011

It is really easy to use the Picture Perfect and a quick way to make something special for someone special.  I can already think of a few things to make:  Cushion for a grandma, etc.  Will use it for this Christmas to make some gifts.

And then I made something else as well.  And what do you think of my first Baby Bouquet?

Kid’s gifts to count the days

9 Oct

So, me and my dearest husband went on a vacation.  Just me and him, without the children.  It wasn’t easy for us to go without them, but the thought of my parents looking after them, made it easier.  But I want them to enjoy their time and know that we still love them and thinking of them everyday.

I decided to make them gifts for each to tell how many days left before we came home, what we were doing that day and a small message.  And I must say, it was a hit.  My mom said the kids woke up early each morning to open their gifts, reading (or listening) their message.

Here is what I made:

Firstly, the message paper:

On one side of the paper I wrote a message for each one of them.  their own personal message.  then in the middle, I made a big circle (Pink circle for my girl and the blue one for my boy) and wrote the qty of days left in it.  and of course, a picture.  on the other side I paste a map of where we were and a short description of what we will be doing that day (we went on a coach tour and knew what we will be seeing, etc).

Sept 2010 065

If you fold the paper in half, it had a message on both sides.

Sept 2010 068

Ok, and here is the fun part.  I bought a few small toys.  If there was more than one toy in a box, I took them out of the box to give them on separate days.  and I bought a few sweets for their gifts.

Sept 2010 016 Sept 2010 017

Then I took some brown paper bags:

Sept 2010 015

And put a toy and a sweet in each bag.

Sept 2010 067

Then I place the folded paper over the opening of the bag and stapler it all together.

The front side:

Sept 2010 070

The back side with the map on it.

Sept 2010 072

And there it was:  a gift for each day.  quickly (okey, I must admit, the typing part took some time) and cheap.  But most important, they LOVED it.  And you can use it for anything, maybe counting the days to Christmas, an important date or a birthday.

The Cake:

quick way to hang up frames

4 Sep

I love frames.  I really do.  Where ever I see a photo frame, I buy it.  The only problem I have with it,  is that most of them are for a desk and not for hanging on a wall.  Then I found a wonderful product:  No More Nails from Pattex.

Junie 2010 171

Let me show you how to hang up frames quick-quick.  I wanted to redo our entrance hall.  Since we renovated our house, there is still a lot of decorating to be done.  And the entrance hall is one of them.

The before:   boring boring boring boring

Junie 2010 169

But firstly let me show you how to use the No More Nails.

Try to take off the "standing" piece on the back side:

Junie 2010 170

Then stick the tape on:

Junie 2010 172

Take off the blue paper and "paste" it on the wall.  Press for a moment or two

Junie 2010 180

And it really takes only a few minutes to create a wall full of family photos.

Place a table underneath the photos.  And a lamp and a few decoration on the table.  and your entrance wall looks inviting.

How do you hang your frames on the wall?
